Ceramic Coating vs PPF

They are not competing products. One stops chemical damage and makes the car easy to clean; the other stops physical impact. Most good setups use both.

Paint protection film is a thick, self-healing urethane film applied over the paint. A ceramic coating is a thin liquid layer that cures hard and bonds to the clear coat. They defend against completely different things.

Ceramic coating is the answer for

  • Chemical etching — bird droppings, sap, fallout
  • UV fade and oxidation
  • Making the whole car far easier and safer to wash
  • Gloss and water behaviour across every panel
  • Whole-car coverage at a sensible cost

PPF is the answer for

  • Rock chips on the bonnet, bumper and mirrors
  • Physical abrasion on high-impact areas
  • Self-healing of light surface scratches with heat
  • Protecting a high-value or rare paint finish

What we usually recommend

For most Melbourne cars doing freeway kilometres: PPF on the front-end impact zone, and a ceramic or graphene coating over the entire car including on top of the film. The coating makes the film easier to clean and adds the chemical resistance the film does not provide.

If budget only allows one, and stone chipping is not your main worry, the coating is the better whole-car value. We do not fit PPF ourselves, so there is nothing in it for us either way — we will just tell you what your car needs.
